Types of Dealer License – US Dealer Licensing


Dealer license is mandatory, if you want to make money by doing business of buying and selling cars. You cannot buy or sell cars without license. There is different types of vehicle dealer license, some states allow single license for all type of buying and selling vehicles and some allow different license for different purposes, e.g. if you want to buy and sell new cars, you have to get new car license and if you want to do wholesale car business then you have to get wholesale car dealer license.   

The type of license you need depends on the type of business you intend to operate. You have to understand how that works. Some of types of dealer licenses are:

Class A (New Vehicle Dealer)This license allows you to buy or sell cars according to franchise agreement or contract signed with manufacture of the cars.

Class B (Used Vehicle Dealer) – This dealer license allows buy or sell used cars according to the limit and rules set by specific state.

Class C (Used vehicle Parts Dealer) – Dealers get this license for sell or buy cars parts. Dealers also can buy whole vehicles to dissemble for resale parts.

Broker dealer

Class D (Broker) – Broker is dealer who brings buyer and seller together, and displays a vehicle offered for sale. In simple words, a person who conducts a vehicle auction is also type of broker and broker needs Class D license.

Class R (Automotive Recycler) - Automotive recycler dealer buys and get late model vehicles major components for resale them in wholesale or at retail. The dealer may also acquire whole vehicles to dismantle for the resale of parts, selling the remainder as scrap.

Class W (Wholesaler) – A licensed wholesaler dealer buy or sell used vehicles from and to other licensed dealers. Wholesalers only deal with other licensed dealers, they can’t buy or sell vehicle to other person who doesn’t have dealer license.
